Doxycycline is the treatment of choice for anaplasmosis, and all other tickborne rickettsial diseases. Alleman AR, Wamsley HL, Abbott J, et al. Several tests to diagnose exposure or an infection are available. Malcolm Weir, DVM, MSc, MPH; Ryan Llera, BSc, DVM; Ernest Ward, DVM. JAMA 1994;272(3):212-218. From a dietary perspective, fresh raw whole foods are best. Other less commonly observed clinical signs include gastrointestinal problems such as vomiting, diarrhea, or both or respiratory signs such as coughing and labored breathing. WebDoxycycline is recommended for dogs of all ages. Antibiotic treatment is reserved for clinically ill dogs that have tested positive for the anaplasma bacterium. Vet Pathol 2007;44:19. It is transmitted through bites of the deer tick (also known as the black-legged tick) and the Western black-legged tick. This form of anaplasmosis can be difficult to distinguish from Lyme disease, but new diagnostic capabilities are now available. Additionally, it is important to check both of your bodies for ticks after being in areas with a high prevalence, such as in tall grass, forest litter and brushing against other vegetation. 20. 14. Rarely, neurological signs such as seizures have been reported. Infectious diseases of the dog and cat. Most animals will not need to be hospitalized. As the symptoms resemble other diseases, it can be difficult to rule out the conditions by yourself. An extended course of four weeks may be necessary for patients infected with Lyme disease at the same time. WebAnaplasmosis is commonly treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. Treatment for anaplasmosis concentrates on treating the symptoms of the disease and eliminating the bacteria from the body. Since natural sprays dissipate more quickly the spray should be reapplied every 1 - 2 hours. The organisms disappear rapidly from the peripheral blood, and platelet counts rise quickly, reaching a normal value in three or four days. J Clin Microbiol 2003;41(4):1600-1608. The best way to avoid tick-borne diseases such as Anaplasmosis is to use a veterinarian-recommended flea Anaplasmosis in dogs can be treated with a course of an antibiotic such as Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline, or Chloramphenicol. Find a skilled professional herbalist who can help you with the best herbal protocols and dosing for your dog. Rodents are thought to be the reservoir for A. phagocytophilum while dogs are theorized to be the reservoir for A. platys. It is clear that coinfection with two or more tick-borne agents is common and that dogs coinfected with B. burgdorferi and A. phagocytophilum are nearly two times more likely to develop clinical disease than are dogs infected with either agent alone.9 There is also some concern that chronically infected carriers could be adversely affected by therapeutic agents that compromise the immune system or by a concurrent illness that might alter an animal's immune status. Some common antibiotics used to treat Anaplasmosis include, Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline, and Chloramphenicol. Many infected dogs are treated for two to four weeks (the longer course more often if though some pets may have minor or no symptoms at all. In 2001, a major restructuring of the classification of organisms occurred in the order Rickettsiales.1 As a result of these investigations, three separate species of EhrlichiaEhrlichia equi, Ehrlichia phagocytophila, and the previously unnamed agent causing human granulocytic ehrlichiosiswere found to be insufficiently different to warrant separate species designations. This includes the use of antibiotics, pain relievers, and anti-inflammatories. Many infected dogs are treated for two to four weeks (the longer course more often if co-infected with Lyme disease). 6. Several ixodid ticks can serve as vectors for A. phagocytophilum. They tell us there were no symptoms, but a positive test came back during a yearly veterinarian examination and a course of Doxycycline has been recommended. There are no natural treatment options that are clinically effective or recommended. WebThe treatment for canine anaplasmosis is the same as that for other closely related tick-borne infections, including ehrlichiosis and Lyme diseasethe antibiotic doxycycline. The side-effects described in the Conventional Treatment above are why we recommend a natural course of treatment initially for anaplasmosis if your dog's situation is not immediately life-threatening. J Vet Intern Med 2006;20:763. Areas where Anaplasma phagocytophilum are more common include the northeastern, mid-Atlantic and north-central states, as well as California. Anaplasmosis in dogs. This means it has the potential to infect humans. Most dogs will show a noticeable improvement within 24- As in many aspects of life, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.. Be aware that some of these animals may have a chronic, low-level infection and could be adversely affected by medications that compromise the immune system, such as steroids, so use these drugs with caution. Current research suggests that canine anaplasmosis is an acute disease that occurs in dogs a week or two after infection through a tick bite. We have had clients confirm this and we have experienced this with our own dogs, though we have sometimes provided our Antimicrobial formula. 10. The vet may recommend completing the course of treatment even after symptoms improve. In addition, Ehrlichia platys was found to be more closely related to Anaplasma species and was subsequently renamed A. platys.1. Since persistent infection in clinically healthy dogs has been demonstrated,6,7,15 it is likely that a portion of the seropositive animals are chronically infected carriers of the organism. White-tailed deer and several species of small rodents are considered the primary reservoir hosts. Anaplasmosis is a tickborne disease in dogs and cats that was formerly known as Ehrlichiosis and has two different forms. Find a skilled professional herbalist who can help you with the best herbal protocols and dosing for your dog. In light of these diagnostic challenges, once an animal with clinical anaplasmosis has been treated with the recommended course of doxycycline therapy and is clinically normal, administering a second course of doxycycline therapy or a different antimicrobial agent, in an attempt to obtain a seronegative status, is not recommended at this time. given for 30 days to resolve the symptoms and improve the dogs condition. How Is Anaplasmosis Treated? Anaplasmosis is a bacterial tickborne disease. Some common antibiotics used to treat Anaplasmosis include, Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline, and Chloramphenicol. Less common clinical signs include vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, and labored breathing. Though anaplasmosis doesnt concern pet owners as much as other tick-borne diseases. Canine anaplasmosis is caused by one of two gram-negative, obligate, intracellular bacterial agents, Anaplasma phagocytophilum or Anaplasma platys. Even so, alert owners of pets with known exposure to A. phagocytophilum to potential human exposure from infected ticks in the environment. Vet Clin Pathol 1998;27(4):116-122. The earlier in the course of disease the treatment begins, the better the outcome. However, pet parents are usually familiar with their animal's normal behavior and can often tell when one is feeling under-the-weather. Reorganization of genera in the families Rickettsiaceae and Anaplasmataceae in the order Rickettsiales: unification of some species of Ehrlichia with Anaplasma, Cowdria with Ehrlichia and Ehrlichia with Neorickettsia, descriptions of six new species combinations and designation of Ehrlichia equi and 'HGE agent' as subjective synonyms of Ehrlichia phagocytophila. Destruction of the normal ecology of the intestinal tract with the use of a powerful antibiotics for such a long period of time can lead to chronic illnesses like IBD, urinary tract infections, candida overgrowth etc. Your veterinarian will assess the need for additional treatments, such as pain medications or fluid therapy. Canine anaplasmosis is often diagnosed by microscopic identification of morulae in circulating neutrophils in the peripheral blood (Figure 1) and sometimes the synovial fluid (Figure 2). Antibiotics should only be used if absolutely necessary. 4. des Vignes F, Piesman J, Heffernan R, et al. Antibodies to Ehrlichia canis, Ehrlichia platys, and spotted fever group rickettsiae in Louisiana dogs. Anaplasmosis Treatment in Dogs A course of antibiotics such as minocycline, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, or tetracycline is typically used to treat Anaplasmosis in dogs. WebTreatment of Anaplasmosis in Dogs. Dogs with anaplasmosis often have many of the same symptoms as those with Lyme disease, and infection with both agents (co-infection) is not uncommon. These tests are sent to a veterinary laboratory. Most dogs are treated for 14-30 days, though improvement is often seen within the first few days of treatment. Egenvall A, Lilliehk I, Bjersdorff A, et al. J Clin Microbiol 1995;33(5):1098-1103. There are no natural treatment options that are clinically effective or recommended. The most common antibiotic to treat anaplasmosis is doxycycline. Doxycycline at the dosage described above for A. phagocytophilum is apparently effective in treating A. platys infection.12 However, animals with circulating A. platys organisms that have moderate to severe clinical disease or that do not rapidly respond to doxycycline therapy should be tested for other tick-borne diseases. Doxycycline is often used out of fear and this is not healthy for your animal. Common serum biochemical abnormalities include elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity and mild to moderate hypoalbuminemia and hyperfibrinogenemia.2 The hypoalbuminemia usually resolves quickly once animals are afebrile. Early seronegative tests should not be considered a reason to stop therapy, because antibodies may take 1 week to develop in acute cases. Even if a dog infected with anaplasmosis is treated and returns to normal, the dog may continue to test positive for the infection on subsequent blood tests; this does not mean that the dog has an active infection, so a second round of antibiotics to obtain a negative blood test is generally not recommended. A mild to moderate nonregenerative anemia is occasionally seen. Anaplasma platys infection can be diagnosed by light microscopic identification of morulae in circulating platelets. Greig B, Asanovich KM, Armstrong PJ, et al. Editors' note: IDEXX Laboratories has sponsored presentations by both Dr. Alleman and Dr. Wamsley at various continuing education symposia. After that, it takes 1-2 weeks for clinical signs of anaplasmosis to occur. 19. Treatment for Anaplasmosis. More importantly, ticks carry a variety of diseases that can be passed to both dogs and humans. Platelet counts are less dramatically affected in subsequent cycles of bacteremia and clinical signs become milder or unapparent. Symptoms usually begin within one to two weeks of the initial tick bite and transmission. The vet may recommend completing the course of treatment even after symptoms improve. You can consider giving your pup some immunity-boosting herbs like cats claw and echinacea along with oregano, thyme, and other herbs known for their antimicrobial properties. keep lawns cut short, remove leaf piles, etc. During this time, if the dog is clinically healthy, a second round of antibiotic therapy to try to obtain a negative blood test is generally not recommended. Minocycline, Animals from endemic areas are often exposed to A. phagocytophilum, and 40% or more of dogs in these areas may be seropositive.9 However, since the morbidity is low, it appears that many animals may have antibodies to A. phagocytophilum without having any concurrent evidence of clinical disease. It is unknown whether a chronic carrier state can later result in chronic disease. If infection is suspected, dogs should be treated empirically; treatment should not be withheld or delayed pending laboratory results. Anaplasmosis Treatment in Dogs A course of antibiotics such as minocycline, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, or tetracycline is typically used to treat Anaplasmosis in dogs. The reason we mention this is because many animals are able to fight off tickborne illness on their own. There are several herb-based antimicrobial products available for pets that seem to work for anaplasmosis. If a dog is diagnosed with anaplasmosis, strict tick control measures should be taken as this indicates there are infected ticks in the environment that could transmit the disease to humans. Anaplasmosis can be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. 2. What are some ways that I can prevent my dog from contracting anaplasmosis? Vet Rec 2000;146(7):186-190. Animals infected with the most common form of anaplasmosis, A. phagocytophilum, will usally have symptoms for 1 to 7 days; however, some will have no or only minor symptoms. Infection with the more common form of anaplasmosis, A. phagocytophilum, often causes lameness, joint pain, fever, lethargy, and lack of appetite. Canine granulocytotropic anaplasmosis (A. phagocytophilum infection). Dogs from areas where anaplasmosis or Lyme disease are common have often been exposed toA. phagocytophilumand have a positive antibody test result. In most cases a dog's immune system responds by creating antibodies to defend against the bacteria, but as indicated earlier this does not mean they have clinical disease if there are no symptoms present. Experimentally, organisms appear in the peripheral blood between four and 14 days after inoculation and usually persist for up to eight days.5 Anaplasma phagocytophilum morulae may be seen in 1% to 27% of circulating neutrophils. The IFA test uses whole organisms grown in cell culture as the source of antigens. Antibiotics can be used in a later stage when natural methods dont give the desired results. In general, treatment costs associated with anaplasmosis include: Initial diagnostic workup: $150-$350 Antibiotic therapy: $20-$200 Anaplasma phagocytophilium is transmitted by the deer tick and the western black-legged tick. Anaplasmosis in dogs can be treated with a course of antibiotics, with most symptoms improving within 24- 48 hours after beginning treatment. If infection is suspected, dogs should be treated empirically; treatment should not be withheld or delayed pending laboratory results. As with other tick-transmitted diseases, coinfection of A. platys with other infectious agents such as Ehrlichia, Bartonella, or Borrelia species can result in more severe clinical manifestations. One study demonstrated that approximately 40% or more of dogs from areas where anaplasmosis is common may be seropositive (a positive result on a blood test). How Is Anaplasmosis Treated? J Clin Microbiol 1996;34(1):44-48. Natural tick prevention treatments are usually poorly effective, especially in highly endemic areas. Without the pet owner doing anything, the afflicted canine will often regain health in a few days as the immune system responds. Anaplasmosis is treatable in dogs using any number of antibiotics including Chloramphenicol, Minocycline, Doxycycline, and Tetracycline. The antibiotic of choice is oral doxycycline. Doxycycline, orally for 28 days and rarely via IV. Anaplasmosis in dogs can be treated with a course of an antibiotic such as Doxycycline, Minocycline, Tetracycline, or Chloramphenicol. The treatment for canine anaplasmosis is the same as that for infection with the closely related Ehrlichia speciesdoxycycline. However, if you think your pup has been exposed to such a tick-borne disease, it is best to consult a vet and diagnose the condition at the earliest for timely treatment. Retrieved from http://ygrr.org/doginfo/health-ANAPLASMOSIS.htm, Ward, E. DVM. These findings are most often identified during the acute phase of the disease. Since PCR analysis can give false negative results, this assay is unreliable in detecting all subclinical, persistent carriers. Zoologix). These are the same ticks that transmit Lyme disease, which increases the risk of coinfection with anaplasmosis. Infection with A. phagocytophilum, the species more commonly associated with anaplasmosis, causes lameness and is often confused with Lyme disease. If an animal no longer produces antibodies to the organism, this may indicate that the organism has been cleared from the body. Dogs catch ticks from the environment and other animals and end up getting affected with mild to serious tick-borne diseases including anaplasmosis. Holistic treatment for the disease can help the dog fight anaplasmosis by itself. A holistic approach to the disease should help prevent ticks and infection to keep the pet safe. Most dogs are treated for 14-30 days, though improvement is often seen within the first few days of treatment. Infection with A. platys results in a cyclic thrombocytopenia. Harvey JW, Simpson CF, Gaskin JM. Because the deer tick and the western black-legged tick are also vectors for other disease, it is not uncommon for dogs to be co-infected with multiple tick-borne diseases such as ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Lyme disease. Prevention of Anaplasmosis in Dogs. Symptoms are generally vague and non-specific, which can make diagnosis difficult as there is no one clear sign that makes one suspicious for the disease. The long term prognosis for dogs who have undergone a full course of treatment is excellent. You will usually be able to notice an improvement in your canine companion within 1 to 2 days of starting treatment. Can I prevent my dog from developing Anaplasmosis? PCR testing. Many infected dogs are treated for two to four weeks (the longer course more often if These symptoms often resemble the effects of other diseases, making it hard to diagnose the condition on time. Other tests, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), can help your veterinarian determine if an active infection is present. If you think your pet may have been exposed to any tick-borne disease, let your vet know so he or she can get your dog back on track. Alleman AR, Chandrashekar R, Beall M, et al. Dogs infected with A. platys experience a cyclic thrombocytopenia. Doxycycline, orally for 28 days and rarely via IV. We do not know if these dogs will eventually become ill or not. These organisms were phylogenetically most closely related to species in the genus Anaplasma, so they were reclassified as A. phagocytophilum. Presumptive treatment with doxycycline is recommended in patients of all ages, including children <8 years. Vector Borne Zoonotic Dis 2008 Feb 27 [Epub ahead of print]. Individuals are generally programmed to focus on "killing" organisms but we focus more (at least at first) on "building immunity" against invaders. J Clin Microbiol 1998;36(9):2645-2651. Serologic testing. Treatment. These otherwise healthy animals may have a low-level, persistent infection with the anaplasmosis organism and be labeled "chronically infected carriers" but never become ill. Anaplasmosis in dogs can be treated with a course of antibiotics, with most symptoms improving within 24- 48 hours after beginning treatment. The earlier in the course of disease the treatment begins, the better the outcome. However, a positive test result in a clinically healthy dog should not be disregarded. Dumler JS, Barbet AF, Bekker CP, et al. The antibiotic of choice is oral doxycycline. It is prevalent throughout the world and requires timely diagnosis and treatment to avoid further implications. Pets who have a history of tick exposure, live in an endemic area, and have the appropriate signs are all considered at risk. In both cases, while mammals are the reservoir, ticks are the means of transmission. It is best to diagnose the disease on time and adopt a holistic treatment plan. Anaplasmosis can be treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. A tick must be attached and feed for at least 12-24 hours to transmit anaplasmosis to your animal so if your remove it before then your animal should be okay and not all ticks carry this bacteria. Some pets may even display lameness and limited mobility that last longer than usual. Most animals will not need to be hospitalized. Anaplasmosis has been reported worldwide in a wide variety of animals. Finally, A. phagocytophilum is a zoonotic pathogen. Infection with the more common form of anaplasmosis,A. phagocytophilum, often causes lameness, joint pain, fever, lethargy, and anorexia (lack of appetite). In a few serious cases, the pet can suffer from severe respiratory problems or organ failure which can prove to be fatal. Dispose of the tick by placing it in alcohol or flushing down the toilet. The cyclic appearance of clinical cases that coincide with tick season indicates that canine anaplasmosis is an acute disease that occurs in dogs a week or two after organism inoculation by ticks.5,12 Because chronic infection has not been directly related to clinical disease and because a therapeutic regimen effective in clearing the organism from an infected animal has not been established, treating clinically healthy, seropositive animals is of questionable benefit. Treatment for anaplasmosis concentrates on treating the symptoms of the disease and eliminating the bacteria from the body. If you find a tick on your dog or notice any of the symptoms of anaplasmosis, it is best to take the pup to a vet immediately. 17. At a minimum, implement an aggressive tick-control program designed to minimize exposure to ticks, and, hence, to other tick-borne diseases. Effect of tick removal on transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi and Ehrlichia phagocytophila by Ixodes scapularis nymphs. Although this technique is more sensitive in detecting circulating organisms than is light microscopy, it has been shown to be only intermittently positive in subclinically infected, persistent carriers of A. phagocytophilum since organisms may circulate intermittently in the peripheral blood of subclinically infected animals.7,15 Therefore, PCR analysis should not be considered a definitive method for conclusively excluding subclinical infection in clinically normal animals that are seropositive on routine screening. 18. Early seronegative tests should not be considered a reason to stop therapy, because antibodies may take 1 week to develop in acute cases. Anaplasmosis is often diagnosed with a blood test to detect antibodies. The treatment for canine anaplasmosis is the same as that for infection with the closely related Ehrlichia speciesdoxycycline. It is administered at a dose of 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight every 12 hours or WebAnaplasmosis is commonly treated with the antibiotic doxycycline. Anaplasmosis Treatment in Dogs A course of antibiotics such as minocycline, chloramphenicol, doxycycline, or tetracycline is typically used to treat Anaplasmosis in dogs. Clinical signs must be consistent with those found in animals with anaplasmosis and should rapidly resolve in most cases shortly after doxycycline therapy is initiated. Anaplasma platys is more common in Gulf Coast and southwestern states because the brown dog tick is more common in warmer climates. Antibiotics should be used only if absolutely necessary and not out of fear. Even if lameness shows, we have had vets recommend to wait for a day or two to see if it resolves itself and it often does. The lessor form of anaplasmosis is caused by the organism Anaplasma platys and is an infection of the blood platelets that can lead to bleeding disorders and is transmitted by the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). If there are no symptoms a complete blood count to check for abnormalities can be performed, if there are none then treatment should not be recommended with the animal monitored for anaplasmosis symptoms as always in the future. I recommend you add liver, eggs, oysters, spirulina, avocado and pomegranate juice to your dogs regular diet. Both A. phagocytophilum and A. platys are in the order Rickettsiales, which includes members of the genera Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Cowdria, Wolbachia, and Neorickettsia. Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection is an emerging tick-borne infection in dogs, endemic to several areas of the United States and expanding in distribution. This does not mean the animal has an active infection, just that antibodies are still present in the blood from exposure to the bacterial organism. During this time it would be beneficial to provide herbs such as echinacea or cat's claw that support immune function as found in our Antimicrobial formula. According to Dr. With this test, experimental studies have shown that seroconversion in dogs may occur as soon as two to five days after morulae appear in the peripheral blood.8 In another study using sera collected from confirmed cases of A. phagocytophilum infection in horses, dogs, people, and cattle, all serum samples were positive at titers of 1:80 or greater, and most had titers of 1:320.13 For this reason, and because nonspecific binding of antibodies can occur using this assay when serum samples are at dilutions of 1:40 or less, a titer of 1:80 is considered positive for antibodies to A. phagocytophilum. 1. The best prevention includes stringent tick prevention. Egenvall A, Bjersdorff A, Lilliehk I, et al. Please keep in mind that this "protection" is indicated by the presence of antibodies on a blood test - this means your animal's immune system is doing its job! You will usually be able to notice an improvement in your canine companion within 1 to 2 days of starting treatment. Anaplasmosis Treatment for Dogs As with other bacterial infections, anaplasmosis is treated with antibiotics. If infection is suspected, dogs should be treated empirically; treatment should not be withheld or delayed pending laboratory results. After starting medication, dogs often start to feel better in 1-2 days, but require treatment for at least two weeks. Cyclic thrombocytopenia induced by a Rickettsia-like agent in dogs. PCR testing for A. platys, which can distinguish between the two organisms, is typically done in experimental laboratories for research purposes, but a PCR test is also commercially available (e.g. The earlier in the course of disease the treatment begins, the better the outcome. The most common hematologic abnormality noted in clinically affected dogs is a mild to severe thrombocytopenia, seen in more than 80% of acutely infected dogs.2,8,11 Additionally, many animals will initially have lymphopenia but later may develop a reactive lymphocytosis. There are several herb-based antimicrobial products available for pets that seem to work for anaplasmosis.
